Effective: April 2, 2025

On April 2, 2025, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a new version of Form I-9. The good news? Employers may continue using the previous versions, and no immediate changes are required.

What Changed?

The updated Form I-9 includes the following revisions:

  • “Noncitizen” replaced with “alien”

  • “Gender” replaced with “sex”

  • New edition date: 1/20/25

The instructions have also been updated with similar terminology changes and a revised Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Privacy Notice. These updates will be reflected in E-Verify and E-Verify+ as of April 3, 2025.

What You Need to Know:

Employers using paper forms can continue using the 8/1/23 editions of Form I-9, which remain valid through their respective expiration dates in 2026 and 2027. No updates to your internal processes are needed at this time.

E-Verify Users – Take Note:

If your organization uses E-Verify and continues to use the 8/1/23 Form I-9, be aware of a terminology mismatch. When an employee selects “a noncitizen authorized to work” on Form I-9, you will need to choose “an alien authorized to work” in E-Verify.

For Vida HR Clients Using isolved Onboarding:

If you are using isolved’s onboarding solution through Vida HR, no action is required. The system will be updated automatically to reflect the latest version and terminology.
