Wyoming Expands Definition of Service Animal

Effective: March 3, 2025
Beginning March 3, 2025, Wyoming will broaden its definition of a service animal under public accommodation laws to include dogs that are being trained to perform work or tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability.
Previously, Wyoming law relied solely on the federal definition under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). With this amendment (WY S.B. 147, amending Wyo. Stat. Ann. § 35-13-205), public accommodations must now also allow access to dogs actively undergoing service animal training.
What This Means for Employers:
Businesses open to the public in Wyoming—including retail, hospitality, and healthcare settings—should review their service animal and customer accommodation policies to ensure compliance with the expanded definition. Employees should be trained to recognize and respect the rights of individuals accompanied by service dogs in training.
